I usually recommend reading this before Stormlight because there are a few connections between the two (one of which you will notice right away), but it's not like reading Stormlight first will detract from your experience. As far as I can recall, their plots are not connected, and it doesn't matter which you read first. The Emperor's Soul is a novella set on the same world as Elantris, but is a standalone story and not connected to the novel. Elantris is Sanderson's first book, and the world he creates is really interesting. Produces: Brandon is a robot!
